Vermont's Northeast Kingdom is renowned for its rural heritage and natural beauty. And from deep within this marvelous region the gourmet specialty food business Northeast Kingdom Mustard Co. produces and markets an incredible line of gourmet condiments--and captures picturesque scenes from this kingdom on its labels.
In the early 1990s, Joanie and Karen Bennett offered a secret gourmet mustard to friends and family members at various gatherings and church fundraising events. In time, people raved about this mustard and offered compensation for more. "You should start selling this stuff" was a suggestion they often heard. Consequently, Joanie and Karen researched and developed a marketing vision. Finally in 1994, they began producing and marketing their original recipe from a log home on a rural hillside in Orleans, Vermont. The initial product line included their original Sweet Hot mustard family recipe as well as two versions of this original, Sweet Mild Mustard and Sweet Garlic Mustard. In 1996, after countless hours of taste testing, research, and development, NEKMC introduced three additional condiments--Maple Apple Chutney, Dill & Honey Mustard, and Spicy Maple Mustard. During this time, NEKMC's Sweet Hot Mustard beat out more than 150 competing mustards to earn a First-Place Blue Ribbon in the Sweet and Tangy Division of Food Distribution Magazine's Mustard Mania competition! Throughout the rest of the 1990s, Northeast Kingdom Mustard Co. continued to build a reputation for a top-quality gourmet product line that became irresistible to many taste buds!
In 2000, after developing this promising line of condiments, Joanie and Karen faced a difficult decision -- to sell or cease production. After thoughtful consideration, they decided that "to sell" was in the best interest of Northeast Kingdom Mustard Company. Along came Mark and Lynn Royer! After months of preparation, September 2000 marked the official "adoption" of Joanie and Karen's "child."
Chapter three began in the summer of 2007. After seven years of mustard making the Royer family decided to move on. In stepped Steve and Amy Wheeler, close friends of Mark and Lynn. With a shared love of family, gourmet food products and the Northeast Kingdom, the Wheelers moved the operation to Westfield, VT where they already had a commercial kitchen full of maple specialty foods. What a sweet combination! Their kitchen is now a bustling spot where you find not only all natural condiments but the sweetest maple confections too.
And while you continue to tempt your taste buds by supporting their livelihood, stay tuned for new product additions and continued updates to the history of this home-based business.
Enjoy and Thank You!
